An Abundance Mindset: Breaking Free From the Mindset of Scarcity

Have you ever held something back out of fear you might run out? I’m not talking about telling your friend you just ate your last piece of gum to avoid anyone else asking for a piece(I do this a lot so please keep me in prayer :P). Like, really holding back your resources, love, expertise, time, etc because you are scared someone might get ahead or you might be taken advantage of? Or maybe you are concerned about too many people doing what you are trying to do. There are countless reasons why we hold back. And let me tell you, there is plenty out there to share! Scarcity is a mindset and so many of us are programmed to think this way. Scarcity says ‘there’s a limit to everything and I must make sure I have plenty.’ Abundance says, ‘ there will always be enough’.

One of my favorite authors Steve Covey, wrote in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People ‘People with a scarcity mindset have a difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power and profit.’ Does that sound like a person you want to be? Me either. I want to be so confident in who I am that I’m not worried about anyone or anything draining from me. Which is obviously difficult in the society we live in today, a society that tells you to only look out for yourself. But here’s the problem with only looking out for yourself, it puts a limit to what you will receive. Luke 6:37 states ‘Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full–pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back‘ Kind of makes you want to give everything, doesn’t it? So not only when you give will you get what you’ve given back, but you’ll receive so much more.

Whether it is monetary or in the form of a something invaluable like peace or love. That is abundance. There is enough. There will always be more. There is more than enough for you. You can give your all and you wont run empty or lack in any way. You can donate to charity or someone in need because when you bless others you are also going to be blessed. You can share that advice without the threat that anything will be taken away from you. An abundance mindset tells you there is always new opportunities. It opens your mind to see the endless possibilities that exist. Abundance is all about enjoying the present moment because tomorrow is not promised. When you have an abundance mindset your relationships are better, you are not worried about how much is too much to give- you won’t hold back but freely give. Scarcity is confining, Abundance is free. I want to work each day to cultivate abundance in love, finances and health.
